Nevil Shute’s most powerful novel—a bestseller for decades after its 1957 publication—is an unforgettable vision of a post-apocalyptic world. After a nuclear World War III has destroyed most of the globe, the few remaining survivors in southern Australia await the radioactive cloud that is heading their way and bringing certain death to everyone in its path.

Nevil Shute. On The Beach. Nevil Shute's "On The Beach" is a classic for good reason. Shute takes the most horrific event one can imagine-a worldwide nuclear event-and then turns the microscope on it, focusing in on just a few ordinary people who must wait for death as it drifts over to their hemisphere. We see military personnel, housewives, businessmen, and more.

Nevil Shute was born on 17 January 1899 in Ealing, London. After attending the Dragon School and Shrewsbury School, he studied Engineering Science at Balliol College, Oxford. He worked as an aeronautical engineer and published his first novel, Marazan, in 1926. In 1931 he married Frances Mary Heaton and they went on to have two daughters.

With that in mind, my January course on human extinction includes two books I've never read before (so very daring!), and I've just finished the older of the two, Nevil Shute's still-remarkable 1957 novel On the Beach. Many years ago, I pulled this book off my parents' shelves, but replaced it on the cover-driven assumption that it was really a romance novel; errors can have such a long half 2010-02-09 ON THE BEACH by Nevil Shute (1960) Signet Movie Tie In. ON THE BEACH (1959) The first "On The Beach" is the film that made Nevil Shute a household word in the United States and elsewhere. It was produced by Stanley Kramer at United Artists, directed by Stanley Kramer, and starred Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astair, and Anthony Perkins.

It may be less flashy, but this timeless novel has one thing that those modern masterpieces of post-apocalyptic panic can't touch—it's actually realistic. Had never heard of Nevil Shute until I came across his name on Peter Hennessey's book The Secret State (about Whitehall and Governments actions during the Cold War).
